Classification System

Organising records into a navigable structure

The classification system is the foundation of the Orwellcombe platform. Every record that enters the environment is assigned to at least one category before it becomes available for review. Categories are defined by content type, subject matter, and the record's relationship to other entries within the same area.

The system is hierarchical: broad categories contain subcategories, and subcategories may contain further subdivisions where the volume or complexity of records justifies a finer level of organisation. Users can navigate through this hierarchy from the top level down to individual records, or they can apply filters to reach specific content more directly.

Classification labels are maintained to reflect the actual content they describe. Where categories change or are reorganised, existing records are reassigned rather than left in outdated positions.

Review Environment

Examining records clearly, in their organised context

The review environment is where users interact directly with the information held within the platform. Records are displayed with their key fields prominently presented, and additional detail is available for items that require closer examination.

The interface is designed to reduce the cognitive load associated with examining large amounts of information. Records are shown alongside their category context, so users always know where they are within the classification structure. Related records are surfaced where relevant, helping users build a complete picture without having to construct separate searches.

The review layer is read-oriented: it surfaces information clearly without encouraging rapid consumption. Users who need to spend time with a particular record can do so without the interface pushing them toward the next item prematurely.

All Available Capabilities

What the Orwellcombe platform includes

The following capabilities are part of the current platform scope. Each item describes a distinct function available through the Orwellcombe interface.

  • Hierarchical classificationRecords are organised into a multi-level category structure that can be navigated from broad to specific.
  • Category-level filteringApply filters to narrow the visible record set to entries matching specified criteria within a category.
  • Record detail viewOpen individual records to see their full field set, category assignment, and any related entries.
  • Related record linkingEntries that share meaningful relationships are surfaced together within the review environment.
  • Category overview panelsEach category includes a summary view showing the number and type of records it contains.
  • Structured field presentationRecord fields are presented in a consistent order to support efficient comparison across multiple entries.
  • Contextual navigationThe interface retains context as users move between records, reducing the need to re-navigate from the top level.
  • Access enquiry pathwayUsers who require access to specific categories can submit an enquiry directly through the platform's enquiry form.
Organisation

Classification and structure

The categorisation layer assigns every record a position within the platform's taxonomy. The structure is designed to remain coherent as new categories are added and existing ones are refined over time.

Review

Information examination

The review layer presents records clearly within their category context. Field-level detail is available for each entry, and the interface supports extended review of complex records without introducing unnecessary navigation steps.

Navigation

Pathway and filtering tools

Navigational tools help users locate relevant records efficiently. Category filters, hierarchical browsing, and related-record links each serve a different part of the information-finding process within the platform.

Support

Enquiry and access assistance

The support function covers access enquiries, questions about classification decisions, and requests for clarification regarding the information held within specific categories. Enquiries are reviewed and responded to by the Orwellcombe team.
